Architectural Detail: The Cottage Railing

What makes a cottage, a cottage?

I argue that it is in the architectural details. Even if you don't own a sea captain's house on Nantucket or a neglected coastal getaway, there are little architectural details that can bring that cottage charm home. Cottage details can also be very sophisticated, take for example, the classic cottage railing. I have found some wonderful examples to share with you but unfortunately, could not find a ready made source. It leads me to believe that these railings are most likely custom. Please leave a comment if you know of a potential source for a cottage rail.

I love the cottage railing featured in this lovely photograph from Veranda selected by Heather of Satisfying Spaces as one of her favorite images of late. Notice how the detail in the railing picks up the design in the chandelier. The view is breathtaking!

Jim Howard is a master of beautiful architectural details. The stair railing featured above and below are from the store Max and Company that he owns with his wife, Phoebe Howard.

I couldn't resist sharing these photos again from Bazeley House, my forever cottage. The architectural details in this cottage are worthy of a high powered magnifying glass. I adore the crisp, white paint color.

In addition to the picket style railing showcased above, I also like the preppy green cottage railing featured recently in Country Living. Jason Oliver Nixon, Gotham magazine's lifestyle editor, and his decorator, John Loecke, used their considerable talents to transform a neglected 1840's schoolhouse in the Catskills. The cottage railing was inspired by a Chinese garden bridge.
